What is Claude?

Understanding AI assistants and how they can help you work smarter.

1Claude is an AI Assistant

Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic. Think of it as a knowledgeable collaborator that can help you write, analyze, research, code, and think through problems. It understands context, follows instructions, and can handle complex tasks across virtually any domain.

2It's a Conversation, Not a Search

Unlike Google, you don't type keywords. You have a conversation. Ask questions, provide context, and build on previous responses. Claude remembers everything in your current conversation, so you can say "make that shorter" or "explain that differently" without repeating yourself.

3Claude Doesn't "Know" Everything

Claude was trained on data with a knowledge cutoff, so it may not know about very recent events. It also can't browse the internet, access your files, or remember past conversations. Each new chat starts fresh. For current information, you'll need to provide context or use Claude's web search feature when available.

Head to claude.ai to start using Claude for free. Create an account and you're ready to go. The free tier has generous limits for most personal and small business use.

Claude — The Chat

The one most people know. Go to claude.ai, type a question, get an answer. It's a conversation — you go back and forth until you get what you need. Good for writing, brainstorming, analysis, learning, and quick tasks.

  • Best for: Writing emails, drafting proposals, summarizing documents, brainstorming, research
  • How it works: Web browser or mobile app. Type a message, get a response.
  • Feels like: Texting a really smart colleague
  • Cost: Free tier available. Pro plan $20/mo for more usage and features.

Claude Code — The Terminal

A command-line tool for developers and technical users. Runs in your terminal, can read and write files on your computer, execute commands, and build software. This is the tool wolfgrey uses to build automations and client projects.

  • Best for: Writing code, building automations, editing files in bulk, running scripts
  • How it works: Terminal/command line. You describe what to build, it writes and runs the code.
  • Feels like: Pair programming with a senior developer
  • Cost: Requires a Claude Pro ($20/mo) or Max ($100/mo) subscription. Also available via API.

Cowork — The Desktop Agent

The newest product. A desktop app (Mac and Windows) that gives Claude access to your actual files and folders. You point it at a folder, describe a task, and it works through it independently — organizing files, creating spreadsheets from scattered notes, generating reports. You don't babysit it; you check in when it's done.

  • Best for: File organization, document creation, data cleanup, multi-step office tasks
  • How it works: Desktop app. Grant access to a folder, describe the task, let it work.
  • Feels like: Delegating to a virtual assistant who can actually touch your files
  • Cost: Available on Max ($100/mo), Team, and Enterprise plans.

Where to Start

If you're new to AI: Start with Claude at claude.ai. It's free, it's simple, and everything in this guide applies to it. Once you're comfortable, Cowork is the natural next step for handling real work tasks. Claude Code is for when you're ready to build automations or need a developer-level tool.

The Art of Prompting

How to communicate with AI to get exactly what you need.

1Be Specific, Not Vague

The more specific your request, the better Claude's response. Vague prompts get generic answers. Specific prompts get useful answers.

2Give Context

Claude can't read your mind. Share relevant background information to get tailored responses.

  • Who you are: "I run a 5-person marketing agency..."
  • What you need: "I need a follow-up email for a prospect who went silent..."
  • Constraints: "Keep it under 50 words, professional but warm tone..."
  • Examples: "Here's an email that worked well before: [paste example]"

3Specify Format

Tell Claude exactly how you want the output structured:

  • "Give me a bulleted list"
  • "Format as a table with columns for X, Y, and Z"
  • "Write this as an email with subject line"
  • "Create a step-by-step numbered guide"
  • "Keep it to 3 sentences"

Common Mistake

Don't treat Claude like a magic 8-ball with one-word questions. "Marketing?" won't get you anywhere. Full sentences with context will.

The CRAFT Framework

A simple structure for writing effective prompts every time.

C — Context

Set the scene. Who are you? What's the situation? What background does Claude need?

"I'm a freelance web designer pitching to a local restaurant that's never had a professional website..."

R — Role

Tell Claude what role to play or what expertise to bring to the task.

"Act as an experienced sales consultant who specializes in small business clients..."

A — Action

Clearly state what you want Claude to do. Use action verbs.

"Write a proposal email that highlights the benefits of having a website for restaurant reservations..."

F — Format

Specify the output structure, length, and style you need.

"Format as a professional email, under 200 words, with a clear call-to-action at the end..."

T — Tone

Define the voice and energy of the response.

"Keep it friendly and conversational, not salesy. Confident but not pushy."

You Don't Need All 5

Not every prompt needs every element. Simple tasks might only need Action + Format. Complex tasks benefit from the full framework. Use what makes sense.

Break Complex Tasks Into Steps

For big projects, don't try to do everything in one prompt. Break it down: "First, help me outline this article. Once we agree on structure, we'll write each section." This produces better results and gives you control over the direction.

Use Examples

If you have a style you like or a format you want, show Claude an example. "Here's a product description I like: [example]. Write 5 more in this style for these products: [list]." Examples are often better than lengthy explanations.

Ask Claude to Ask You Questions

Not sure what information Claude needs? Try: "I want to [goal]. Before we start, ask me any questions you need answered to do this well." Claude will identify gaps in the brief that you might have missed.

Request Multiple Options

Instead of asking for one answer, ask for 3-5 variations. "Give me 5 different subject lines for this email, ranging from conservative to bold." Then pick the best or combine elements.

Save Your Best Prompts

When a prompt works well, save it. Build a personal library of templates you can reuse. Over time, you'll have a toolkit that makes Claude even more powerful for your specific needs.

Things Claude Won't Do Well

  • Real-time information: Claude doesn't know today's stock prices or yesterday's news
  • Math with many steps: Complex calculations can have errors - verify important numbers
  • Personal memory: Each new conversation starts fresh - Claude won't remember last week's chat
  • Truly random: If you need genuine randomness, use a proper random generator
  • Perfect accuracy: Always verify facts for critical decisions, especially dates and statistics
